Fernard Engel Domaine is a family-run winery. The vineyard covers 50 HA and was turned into an organic viniculture in the year 2001. Grapes are harvested when fully ripe and are carefully selected in order to ensure the best quality.

Tasting notes
Lovely nose of lychees with overtones of cinnamon and nutmeg, followed by some bitterness and flavours of quince and banana on the palate.

Producer information: Domaine Fernand Engel
Three generations of the Engel family have run this 50-hectare estate with vineyards in 7 local villages near the famous castle of Haut Koenigsbourg. The estate is entirely given over to organic production, free from pesticides and herbicides. They use specific plants to improve soil texture and dried plants and herbs to create resistance to vine disease. This range is suitable for vegetarians and vegans. Aging on the lees longer than usual produces wines of the concentration of which half are exported.

Rioja, Spain
Detailed product information
AppellationRioja

Only produced in excellent vintages, this classic Rioja made only from Tempranillo, it is powerful and well-balanced with rich dark fruit and a little vanilla from the oak casks in which it is matured.

Tasting notes
Very deep red colour, black tones, and very light orange rims. Its nice colour, brightness and powerful aromas are due to the high-quality grapes that were used to make it. The oak barrel ageing given to this wine brings out ripe fruit, spices, and a little vanilla.

Producer Information: Bodegas Santalba
Santiago Ijalba and his son Roberto own and run this Bodega in the village of Gimileo, 4 kms from Haro, the wine capital of the Rioja region. They follow the usual Rioja practice of using their own grapes supplemented by those of several contract growers. Tempranillo is the dominant grape, but they also use small quantities of other Rioja red grapes, Garnacha, Graziano, and Mazuelo. This is a modern bodega, but making both traditional and modern wines at the very pinnacle of Rioja wines.
